Jet pumps are primarily used to produce and maintain a vacuum by removing vapors from a closed system. In this service, they are usually called ejectors. Ordinarily, steam provided the motive power.

Their operation is based on Bernoulli s principle, which states that an increase in the speed of a fluid is accompanied by a decrease in its pressure. A nozzle in the jet pump converts the pressurized, slow moving power fluid pumped down by a surface pump into a fast moving fluid (the Venturi effect)
